# From Arequipa to the Colca Canyon
Arequipa, mit ca. 1 Mio. Einwohner die zweitgrösste Stadt Perus liegt auf 2300m über Meer und nur 75km von der Pazifikküste entfernt – was ein ganzjährig mildes und sonniges Klima bewirkt. Die Altstadt wurde aus weissem Vulkangestein erbaut und ist seit 2000 UNESCO Weltkulturerbe.
Der Colca-Cañon liegt ca. 100km nördlich von Arequipa. Mit bis zu 3000m Höhenunterschied gehört er zu den tiefsten Schluchten der Welt. Beim Cruz del Condor kreisen dank der vorhandenen Thermik jeden Morgen quasi mühelos Dutzende von Kondoren über der Schlucht.
Arequipa, with approximately 1 million inhabitants, is Peru's second-largest city. It lies at an altitude of 2,300 meters above sea level and is only 75 kilometers from the Pacific coast, resulting in a mild and sunny climate year-round. The old town, built from white volcanic rock, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The Colca Canyon is located about 100 kilometers north of Arequipa. With a vertical drop of up to 3,000 meters, it is one of the deepest canyons in the world. At Cruz del Condor, thanks to the prevailing thermals, dozens of condors effortlessly circle above the canyon every morning.
